I often write about men’s fashion, but I’ve yet to tackle the topic of style for bigger men. To be honest, I’m not a fan of obesity—it’s a personal topic for me, having lost family members to health issues linked to it. However, I firmly believe that while someone works on their health, they still deserve to look good and feel confident in what they wear.
Unfortunately, many fashion brands don’t cater well to plus-size individuals. Too often, their options are shapeless, tent-like clothes that lack any real design or style. But the good news is, there are brands out there making stylish clothes in larger sizes.
If you’re a plus-size man, here are some key tips and advice to help you dress fabulously:
Choose the Right Fit
Fit is everything. Don’t go for clothes that are too tight or too loose. Baggy clothes can make you look bigger, and tight ones can be uncomfortable. Look for pieces that fit well and sit comfortably on your body. Tailored styles work best.
Use Layers to Your Advantage
Layering is a simple way to look stylish.
- For a casual look, wear a T-shirt with an open button-up shirt or a jacket.
- For a dressy look, add a blazer over a shirt.
Stick to lightweight fabrics so you don’t feel bulky.
Go for Dark Colors, but Add Variety
Dark colors like black, navy, and gray are slimming and easy to style. But don’t stick to them all the time. Try adding earthy tones like olive green, burgundy, or rust to add a bit of personality.
Pick the Right Patterns
Avoid big, loud patterns. Instead, go for smaller prints like tiny dots or checks for a smart look.
Basics You Need
Every man should have these in his wardrobe:
- Dark Jeans: Straight-leg jeans look great and are super versatile.
- Button-Up Shirts: Cotton or linen shirts are perfect for any occasion.
- Blazers or Jackets: They add structure and a polished look.
- V-Neck Sweaters: These highlight your shoulders and are perfect for layering.
Choose the Right Shoes
Don’t forget your shoes! A pair of clean sneakers works for casual outfits, loafers are great for semi-formal looks, and boots can add an edge to any outfit.
And yes, there are brands that get it right! I’ve found some that design clothes with style, not just size, in mind. So, even if you’re on your journey to better health, you can still dress with confidence and class.
